Contributed by Kevin D. Horn, MD

PATIENT HISTORY:

The subject is a 33 year old morbidly obese white male (535 pounds). He presented to the hospital two weeks following a gastric vertical banding procedure for his obesity with fever and diarrhea. His hospital course was complicated by infection of and evisceration of his abdominal incision with vancomycin- resistant enterococcus faecium. Respiratory failure and death due to his sepsis followed a monthlong hospital stay. A testicular finding unrelated to the cause of death was noted on autopsy.
