GLANDULAR EPITHELIA
SMALL BOWEL:
In the small intestine, both cells and structures are
modified for absorption rather than
secretion. Although a few mucin-containing goblet cells are
seen, most are smaller cells
rendered a deep red-pink by their numerous mitochondria and other
pumping machinery
require for membrane transport. The overall architecture is
dominated by finger-like villi
which project into the lumen. In a well-oriented specimen, they
are parallel and of near equal
length. The submucosa and muscularis propria are similar to those
of the colon.
