Indexing of Medical Data withUMLS

• National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus

• 700,000 keywords, including definitions, lexical variants, SNOMED, LOINC, CPT, ICD-9, and other medical notations

• The NLM & Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) conducted a Large Scale Vocabulary Test (LSVT enhanced UMLS) to improve UMLS

  • portions of SNOMED International not in the 1996 UMLS
    • included an all important medical entities dictionaries
  • the LOINC (Logical Observations Identifiers, Names, and Codes)
    • included an up to date medical procedures listing
  • about 300,000 terms were added to this new version of the UMLS

• We employed both in a testing our ability to index images in our databases (Demo at URL = http://path.upmc.edu/nlm/ )
