Department of Pathology
Clinical and Research Training Program

Phase I application

To apply to the PIRT Program please provide the following materials to:

    Shari Tipton
    S417 BST
    200 Lothrop Street
    Pittsburgh, PA 15261

  1. Curriculum Vitae.
  2. Up to 3 reprints of prior publications
  3. 1-2 page document describing commitment to an academic career in pathology focused on performing independent basic research and how acceptance in the PIRT program will help prepare you for this career. Include a projected time-line for accomplishment of career development goals with relation to residency training.
  4. Two references who can address the candidate's potential for a research career must be included as part of the application.

All invitations to interview are handled solely by the Residency office. Please do not send a Phase I application until after you have been invited to interview.

Candidates should clearly indicate in their correspondence with the Residency program that they are interested in the PIRT program, and identify PIRT committee members that they would like to meet. This will allow scheduling of their interview to include at least one PIRT committee member. Phone interviews can then be scheduled with other committee members as needed after their first visit to Pittsburgh.

Candidate Selection

Strong candidate for the residency program is a prerequisite for consideration by PIRT.
From among the candidates that are selected by the residency program for interview, the PIRT committee will consider:

  1. Candidate's goals and commitment to a career in biomedical research.
  2. Candidate's potential to develop into an independent investigator, based upon past accomplishments and personal characteristics.

Acceptance

The PIRT selection committee will score the applications independently of the residency program. From among the residents that match into the Pathology residency program, the top scoring applicants that qualify for PIRT will be offered a PIRT training position. The PIRT selection committee members are NOT involved in residency rankings, and cannot accept applicants into the program until after the match. However, applicants will be notified if they are considered to be strong, acceptable candidates for the program.
